You can of course become an employee Filmmaker and working in a production company. Depending what kind of position you would want to end up working as, you need to spend years on other people’s projects, and then work your way up. What most people I know do, is to work as a freelance filmmaker. It’s what I’ve been doing. As a freelancer, you get hired on a project to project basis. You also need so see new projects and you never know when that will be. It can be pretty nerve wracking....

I’ve shot an indie film this year. Like many other first-time feature filmmakers, I’ve done that, in an inexpensive way. This days, there are no excuses to not do it. And filmmaker with passion and a story can make a film. But still so many of my friends and colleges, won’t shoot one. Why? The reality is, that your audience doesn’t care if the film is an indie, made for almost nothing. As long as the story is great. Of course, you need this days, with all the high definition phones,...

The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC 4K) is a great camera for filmmakers with a budget. It’s around $1,300. It’s very handy and the usability is great. Like most Blackmagic products, the quality of the images is great. It’s uncompressed 4k. A touchscreen which is bright and easy to use. Multiple storage options with a good selling price. You don’t have however a continuous autofocus and the battery life, is like other Blackmagic products not great. This camera has a superior video...

You don’t need NEW gear New photography gear can cost a lot. Altough the cost for cameras dropped in the last couple of years, it will still cost you a lot. How can you cane money? Buy used gear. I used to think that it’s bad to use gear that isn’t new. But if you do your research, usually nothing can go wrong. You could be able to buy some very expensive gear, for less money. Backup your pictures Back things up, to safe yourself time and money. Also, copy into 3 different hardware...

Here in Switzerland the fall is an amazing time. Specially for taking pictures. And because it’s fall again, I want to talk about, how to take your best picture during fall. Polarizing filter You need a good polarizing filter on your lens. It will boost the contrast in the sky and the blue tones will be deeper, while on the same time making the white clouds pop out. It will also boost the color of the leaves. Shoot towards the sunThat’s always a good idea, if you do it right and in the...

So I went to L.A. for my film school. And after attending one, I can pretty much answer this question with a simple, no! We discussed this many times with my fellow filmstudents. Don’t get me wrong. It was a great experience, specially living in L.A. But with the internet, youtube etc. you can learn a lot online. Film school is not necessary. You can learn everyting by yourself. You just need to know, where to find the information you need. So let me give some advice, after I went to film...

What I see everytime I wanna shoot with a long exposure, is that I let too much light in. It’s many times over-exposed. For that, there is one solution. Neutral density filters. I wish I knew that years ago, before going to filmschool. Neutral density (ND) filters, reduce the amount of light entering into the camera. I’ve learned that in filmschool, while we were shooting with film. It will reduce light uniformly, so that contrast and dynamic range are not affected, unlike a graduated...

Location scouting For me at least, I prefer to be much prepared as I can. I read online about my destination and how I can...

“When I have more money on the next film, I’ll be able to…”, how many times have I and I’m sure you heard that. I’ve shot last year my feature film debut. It’s a 97 minutes, drama - thriller, shot in 15 days, with micro budget. What’s micro budget? A micro budget film is, when it’s made on an extremely low budget, sometimes as little as a few thousand dollars. For example 1992 film El Mariachi, from director Robert Rodriguez. $7000 budget. And despite this, it was a success...

The wait is almost over. In 2019, Adobe will release Adobe Photoshop in Full, on the iPad. I’ve dreamed about working on an iPad, with a full version of Adobe, since Apple released their Pencil. Finally, my dreams and many of yours I guess, are coming through. Apparently, you can work on a .PSD file on your laptop and then save it on the cloud, for continue working on it, on a different device. There are new touch interface features too, like a “touch modifier” button that allows you to...
